- Title 49 of the Code of Federal
Regulations (CFR) parts 100-185 is the legal authority for
regulating packaging and shipping of hazardous materials.
- Training and documentation
requirements are defined in 49 CFR 172.704.
- HAZMAT employers and/or employees may
train themselves to be in compliance with 49 CFR 172.704.
- The employer is responsible for
certifying that employees are trained to package and ship
hazardous materials.
- Persons conducting training (unless
the trainer is the employer) do not certify that an employee
has been trained.
- Employers attest to or certify that
employees completed training and have the knowledge and
skills needed to appropriately recognize, handle, pack, and
offer for shipment the hazardous materials the employee is
responsible for.
- Any test (written, oral, or
demonstration) that ensures that an employee can perform the
assigned duties associated with packaging and shipping is
acceptable. Employers must maintain documentation of the
training and testing for each employee.
- Training programs are available. Saf-T-Pak
